The Hats of Winter 2012 (and how to wear them!)

With temperatures dropping to a single degree last night it's not surprise that hats are on our minds (no pun intended)-at least over here on the East coast. Luckily for us, this season is packed with tons of fun hats for every style.

Here I've selected for you my top 9 choices for trendy hats this winter. The best part is- all are affordable- (well, except for the Marc Jacobs fur trapper, but I couldn't resist!) Color is definitely in this season and what better way to spice up the winter blahs than to incorporate a statement piece that is pulling double duty!

Wide brimmed hats like the Red Abelly, ASOS color block floppy hat, and the Ava Wide Brim Trilby hat are the scene stealers right now. This eclectic boho look can add instant chicness to your outfit. I personally just bought a hat similar to the fringe bow floppy hat pictured above and am loving it! I've worn mine with printed jeans and maxi skirts, the color block versions, however can be a bit challenging to style. I'd suggest wearing one of these hats with a neutral-colored sweater dress or sweater/maxi skirt combo. It could also be dressed down with a pair of light washed jeans and a solid-colored cable knit sweater. (but be sure if the color of your sweater is different from the color in your hat that you tie the hat color in with another accessory to create flow in your look).

A new twist on the floppy favorite is to add a bit of color blocking! This trend which was often seen over the past few seasons in dresses, skirts, and tops; is now again being brought into the limelight as a statement headpiece. Bold colors of the season include traditional fiery red and cool cobalt blue. Wear a bold colored hat like this with something a little dressier. If you're wearing the statement on your head, tone the rest of your outfit down with a camel color and perhaps one more statement color to complement your hat's hue.

A great way to update last season's fedora is to don a less fussy version embellished with gorgeous feather detailing. Nothing screams laid back more than the boho fedora. Bonus- this hat will literally go with anything in your wardrobe.

If you're a beanie girl, (hello awful hair day) this super-easy and uber comfy staple is always in style. Try changing up your normal neutral with a fun color like orange or an eye-catching print like nordic/fairisle. Hats like these are best suited for casual wear so throw one on with your cutest sweater and jeans/leggings while topping it off with a cute pea coat!

Nothing keeps your warmer, however, than a good old fur trapper hat! I love these things. So cute and the ultimate in warmth on those days when you freeze just getting out of bed. The newest version of this classic is a super bright option with soft faux rabbit hair. This Marc Jacobs selection is a bit pricey, but luckily there are other equally cute choices such as this one, which is almost identical and only $30! If you're not quite ready to make this kind of a statement, try the fur trapper in neutral tones but in a new print like fairisle.

  1. I adore your picks. I wish I could wear hats though. I just end up looking like a 12 year old boy haha.
